Remediation – Preventing
Plume Migration
Earth Systems designed and implemented one of the most successful
wood preserving site cleanup actions in Florida at a former
wood treatment facility in Lake City, Florida. At project
inception, up to 8 feet of free product (pentachlorophenal
dissolved into diesel fuel) was present above the water table.
This free product was seeping into a creek that discharges
to Alligator Lake, which supplies drinking water in the Lake
City area.
Earth Systems designed a free product recovery program as
an interim remedial measure and immediately controlled discharge
to the creek. The firm engineered a soil bioremediation system
for the site and trained onsite personnel to implement the
system at great savings to the responsible party. Free product
was reduced to a sheen. To date, over 200,000 cubic yards
of soil have been remediated to Florida’s Soil Cleanup
Target Levels.
